exchange 2016

Hi Everyone

I hope this is the correct area to ask this question.

I have Exchange 2016 setup behind the UTM9 firewall and would like to find detailed information on how to set this up so I can send and receive emails through the UTM and my exchange server.

If anyone could point me in the right direction on what needs setup on the UTM firewall that would be greatly appreciated.

The version of UTM is 9.407-3

Thanks Eeveryone

  • There are actually 2 ways to get this working. 1 is to just forward all the necessary ports from your external WAN to your Exchange server using DNAT rules. The other involves enabling the SMTP proxy (if this is in your license this would be the best way to go).

In the latter situation you should go to e-mail protection -> SMTP. Try starting with Simple mode (which in most cases will suffice).

On the routing tab add your mail domain(s) and specify your internal Exchange server.

On the relaying tab configure your Exchange server with Host-based Relay so this server is allowed to relay mail through the UTM and setup your Exchange server to send all outgoing mail to smart host (being your UTM).

On the Advanced Tab under Advanced settings it is adviced to use the SMTP host name that is also configured as the reverse hostname belonging to your external IP-address (some mail server will reject mail where dns-name and reverse dns-name do not match).

  • I maintain a post about this: Basic Exchange setup with SMTP Proxy.  You might also be interested in Configure WAF for Exchange.

PS Dave, should one of the mods move this thread to the Email Protection forum?
