Setting QOS values on Interface

Hi Group,

At some point, I'm not sure when, Sophos decided to change the way Mbps values are entered into the QOS setting.  It used to be that you put the full kbits number in.

For example, if you wanted to put 20Mbps into the QOS setting on your interface, you wrote it like this- 20480

Today, according to the built in documentation, if I want 20 Mbps, I simply type 20.

However, there seems to be a discrepancy.  Whenever the update occurred that changed this, it seems to have improperly changed the value from 20480 to 20.4 instead of 20.

So, either the documentation is wrong and it should be 20.4 or the conversion is wrong at it should really be 20.

The text of the documentation is as follows-

Make the following settings:

Downlink Mbit/sec/Uplink Mbit/sec: Enter the uplink and downlink bandwidth (in Mbit/s) provided by your ISP. For example, for a 5 Mbit/s Internet connection for both uplink and downlink, enter 5. Values between 1 and 10000 are allowed.

I'm leaning towards the documentation being wrong.  I say this because once you reach a certain threshhold (namely 42Mbps), it is represented one number higher.  ie 42Mbps is really 43008 kbits.  Would I type 42 or 43?  See the issue?

To take the documentation to its logical conclusion, 5Mbps connection would really be 5.1 (5120 kbits)

    Your assessment is correct. If you plug in 100 megs as speed, UTM will take it as 100000 kbits/s. But are there 1024 bits in 1 kilobit? [:D]  When the change first happened in UTM, it bugged me also but we overlook this when buying hard drives etc. Its not an excuse but even when you try to convert 100mbit to kbit on google you will get 100000 kbit[8-|]

    You can test it yourself by trying to reserve more bandwidth than what you have available on a 100mb connection like below

  • BillyBob, are you affiliated with Sophos?  I'm trying to decide if I need to bring someone from Sophos into the conversation.

  • I don't work for sophos. The interface values are not that important if you are not globally throttling inbound or outbound traffic. The values used in your bandwidth pools are still broken down to exact kilobits and tc is still seeing your 100mb as 100 so I am not sure why is this so important to you.

    You can test that by using tc

    gatekeeper:/home/login # tc class show dev eth0

    class hfsc 1:11 parent 1:1 leaf 2: sc m1 0bit d 0us m2 27391Kbit

    class hfsc 1: root class hfsc 1:1 parent 1: sc m1 0bit d 0us m2 100Mbit

    class hfsc 1:2 parent 1:1 leaf 8004: sc m1 0bit d 0us m2 128Kbit

    .........SNIP............
