Attempting to Provision remote VOIP phone from behind Sophos UTM Home

Hello all,

I recently migrated from Untangle NG Firewall to Sophos Home. So far I've been very happy. One thing is the Firewall seems to be default block everything, requiring you to slowly poke holes as you go. Also, poking holes is not very user frinedly at the beginning. I have a remote VOIP phone on my network and am attempting to provision it to a Switchvox server on another network. On Untangle, there were no issues, and no ports needed opening/forwarding.

However, with Sophos, I am failing miserably at getting the rules set correctly to allow the phone to properly communicate with the server. It configres on port 5062, which I have even opened with Any/any in source/destination just as a test, and it still timed out. I have even gone to Network Protection -> Voip|SIP and set the server up as a host under SIP Server Networks and "Any" on SIP Client networks. Still nothing.

Can someone point me to what I'm missing here?

  • So, an Any --> Any --> Dest isn't working so you can start to look at things other than the Firewall. Are you seeing the traffic in the Firewall logs at all when you set that rule to "Log Traffic"? Are you using IPS? If so, set an exception for SIP traffic. The annoying thing to get right with VoIP is the NATing.
