Does the Sophos UTM have hidden QOS / Traffic Shaping?

little Background:
i use a Lancom Router at home that is VPN'nd with my Sophos on a vServer, before that i had a sophos UTM on my home server.

Lancom behaviour: When using most of my upload/download bandwith (i guess 50%+) i get noticeable higher pings from internet servers.

Sophos behaviour: Ping doesn't even go up 1ms even when i fire up 99% Down/Upload Bandwith.

Question: Does the Sophos do some hidden background QoS on ICMP Packets or some other Traffic Shaping? I tried to find info on that but it seemed that as long as i am not using QoS that the sophos shouldn't "do" anything. If all it does it hidden QoS on ICMP than there would be no real advantage just cosmetic.

Hi Ben,

In regards to Packet Shaping in the background, I don't think this will be the best term for it, more like throttling. For a bit of context, do you have Web Filtering Anti-Virus Scanning turned on? I noticed on my home utm that browsing and download speeds were slow as a dog but pings were perfectly fine as well as non HTTP traffic being fast. What was happening was my hardware couldn't cope with the level of scanning it was doing on the traffic I was pumping through the UTM so it was effectively throttling my connection.

If you do have Anti-Virus scanning turned on in web filtering, try turning it off and on during a large download and see what happens to the speeds. Another thing that was bottlenecking my connection speed was Intrusion Prevention (Snort) but after removing the rules that don't apply to the network it doesn't bother me anymore.
