Multicast Routing (PIM-SM)

Hi,

I was hoping that somebody could maybe give me some advice on the "Multicast Routing (PIM-SM)" feature on the Sophos UTM? I have looked at the Sophos help document for this, but I am experiencing great difficulty in understanding exactly what is required to get this feature to work.

I had recently re-instated my VLANs, I had originally removed them partially for this reason, Bonjour. I am looking to get mDNS, or Bonjour as Apple call it, to work across two VLANs. I have spent two days now researching this and I understand that from the design of this protocol, it isn't designed to be routed. I had came across an article regarding the Sophos UTM and that mDNS can be routed between VLANs with the use of Multicast Routing and an RP router.

My question is, how would I set this up correctly, and can I set this up with my current hardware? I have the Sophos UTM running as a virtual appliance on a hyper-visor, which has a trunked connection to a layer-3 switch. This switch is a CISCO SG300-10, and does support Multicast Routing. From this switch, I have a layer-2 switch (the port which connects these two switches is a router port and is trunked with all VLANs).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [:)]

    Hi Scott,

    I had read this article previously but I found it a little overwhelming as Multicast Routing is something in which I don't have a lot of experience with. I feel that the article is aimed at people who have a strong knowledge in setting up Multicast Routing. I have tried looking for a simplified version, but I have been unsuccessful in doing this. I may just have to move my print server to the Client VLAN, just so that iOS devices can pick up the printers once again, although, this is really something in which I'd rather not do.

    Yeah, it's something like BGP as it just is not a simple thing.

    I wish that I could be more detailed for you, but I've no Apple junk (sorry, just not a fan of their business or technical decisions [RFCs, we don't need to comply with those])to test with and of the posts here in the forums as well as in support cases, I just haven't seen this in a working setup (mostly due to lack of rendezvous router on the part of the client), so it's all theoretical.

    I agree with you fully, I am also not a fan of Apple. Unfortunately though, family members who use my network have iPads so this is something which is becoming to be quite frustrating. I might just setup a virtual machine with Windows 7 or something and sit it on the Client VLAN, with Bonjour and AirPrint services setup, spent too long trying to work this one out!
