stopped Skype
started ips
started Skype, no entries and still didn't log on

re the link you sent, 

1. nothing apparent to clear the problem.
2. no changes made to rules today, but I assume that there was a snort update in the latest 24 hours, could that be the problem? Any clues to what single rule needs to be disabled?

Hi, you're going to have to look at your IPS log to be sure, but there are some Skype rules in the post I linked.
