IPS Config: "Local Networks" Why not WAN Interface?

Can someone please explain or provide a link to a resource that explains the "Local Networks" IPS setting?

I understand that I "should" enter my LAN interface here but not quite sure what that actually does.

Is the interface specified in this setting where the IPS rules will be applied? Bi or uni-directionally? Why would I want to perform IPS on an internal interface and why not on my external WAN interfaces?

    'Local networks' are indeed the LANs connected to your UTM.  This would include "Internal (Network)" and, if you have one, "DMZ (Network)," but nothing related to any WAN connection.  If you put anything related to the WAN in there, IPS will lock up your UTM sooner or later.
