QoS Questions.

I'm new to Sophos and using QoS in general.

So here's my question.

I have a PBX on my network behind the UTM it needs to have QoS to have good voice quality.

I also have Usenet which I want to be able to download at 100% of my connection speed, when not in use from other high priority items.

I also watch Netflix and want to be able to have it work EVEN when downloading from Usenet.

Can this be done while allowing all applications to have access to 100% of my unused bandwidth?

    Hi,

    there's a couple issues with what you want and what is possible:

    1. IIRC, if you enable QoS 10% of your total bandwidth gets reserved and won't be usable for any one app, so at most you'd get 90% of the speed for Usenet, etc.

    2. once a stream (download, etc.) is going, it's hard to throttle it. i.e. if usenet is going full tilt, and you get a phone call, the call quality may be poor as it's going to be hard to throttle the existing connection

    What I do personally is use QoS and also set bandwidth limits in my bittorrent client, etc.

    I've had VOIP in the past, and if your ISP isn't very good (e.g. Time Warner), then QoS and/or app throttling won't help much if you're using a lot of bandwidth.

    I thought QoS kicked my speeds in the pants also.

    Hi, plupien, an welcome to the User BB!

    Is this for home or business?  Have you already determined whether you have a problem with voice quality without the UTM in place?  What are your up/down speeds?

    This is for home.

    Voice Quality is PERFECT unless EVERYTHING is downloading.
    I pay for 30/5 I get 33/6.5

    Usenet is set to use 25megs during the day and no limit overnight.

    The problem arises when someone fires up Netflix during the day and a usenet download happens to be going. The usenet is automated so it's hard to tell when it's going to fire up.

    Barry, I think you're remembering the recommendation to reserve a maximum of 95% of available bandwidth.

    Plupien, you might want to vote for Time-Based quality of service rules.  For now, the best you can do is to make a Bandwidth Pool on the External interface and guarantee what outbound bandwidth you need for the maximum number of calls.  Also, for inbound, two Download Throttling rules on the External interface:
      Any -> VoIP -> Any : limit to 100000kb
    • Any -> Any ->Any : limit to 30000kb

    You'll want to experiment with that last limit to see what works.

    I've enabled QoS at 30/5... so that gives plenty of headroom.

    I turned off auto QoS.

    I created 2 traffic selectors for the PBX. all traffic in and all traffic out. (other than Voip it only does DNS requests and NTP requests, updates are manual and no outside access other than calls)
    I created a bandwidth pool with those traffic selector with 128k guaranteed bandwidth.

    That should solve the issues, I'll do some testing and report back.

    Yes, it has been important to disable auto-QoS in the past when making explicit rules - thanks for mentioning that!  If you consistently get 33/6.5, you should use those numbers.  The order of the Download Throttling rules is necessary.
