Nat Port for internal devices

I have a need to have some NAT forwarders going from the WAN interface to some internal servers to alow internet access to these servers. What I can't get to work is for a client to still ba able to connect to the servers using the external Host name or External IP address. When these clients are on the internet they work just find but when they are on the local network they will not connect using the external address. Is there some limitation with NAT that will not alow a device on the local Lan to comunacate to the external interface then NAT back to the local LAN.

Hope this makes sense.

    I have mobile DVR's that have to report to a centeral server on the internal network. I have already setup a DNAT rule that NATS the port the DVR uses to comunacate to the server and when the DVR is on the internet. (A Network not internal) it reports just fine through the DNAT port forwarded to the server. However when the DVR is on the internal network it will not comunacate. The DVR only alows one IP address entery to point it to the centeral server so I have to use the external IP address of the firwall.  This alows the DVR to comunacate to the external firewall interface for DNAT when the DVR is off the network and on the internet. Is there a restrection that will not allow the DVR to comunacate when on the local LAN?
