QoS - beginner question

hello,
I know how to setup my Astaro, I've experience with firewalls and the content filter, but with QoS, I am a total beginner, so some things might be quiet obvious.

I've been looking into QoS for a few days now, and I ended up with a few questions:
1. If i want to limit downloading in Astaro, should I put a rule on the Internal Interface?
because from everything I read about Astaro's QoS, the rule has to be set on the last ASG-interface the traffic "passes"(downloadlimit on LAN, upload limit on WAN)

2. Is t here a way to calculate the bandwidth per protocol?
I know I can spend max. 90% of my bandwith, 
is that the uplink, downlink, or the total of those 2?
90% of bandwith means max: 27650 kbit up, 30720 kbit down(this is 90% of each "direction" on the WAN interface)

    1. yes...
    enable the Internal interface on the first QOS tab, and set the bandwidth numbers to the opposite of your internet connection speed. 
    also make sure the External interface is setup correctly. I recommend leaving 'limit uplink' unchecked in this section.

    then use traffic selectors and bandwidth pools to restrict the downloads.
    or you can just use the 'download equalizer' and 'upload optimizer' to balance the bandwidth among your clients.

    2. I believe it's 90% in each direction, so you could create bandwidth pools for up to 90% of each direction.


    Personally, I only have a few selectors/pools:
    VOIP (guarantee 500kbps outgoing)
    guests (limit to a few mbps in each direction. I haven't really tested this yet to see how well it's working.)
    SSH and RDP and VPN clients (guarantee 500kbps)
    Games (been a long time, but guarantee outgoing bandwidth for gaming ports)
    When needed, I limit P2P (BT, eMule) on the client apps, but limiting it with a bandwidth pool should work as long as you don't miss anything.

    Everything else (http, video streaming, etc.) seems to balance OK for me.
    The only real trouble I've had has been with VOIP when the uplink is saturated (P2P), especially when I was on Time Warner and the uplink speeds were very inconsistent.

    Note that the 9.1 beta has new features which aim to simplify QOS for downloads, but I haven't tried it yet.

    That looks right to me, assuming those are your actual bandwidth numbers.
    If your line is 30/30 (symmetric), DON'T subtract 10% here.
    The 90% limit has to do with how much you can allocate in the selectors; the bandwidth on the interfaces should be the actual bandwidth, afaik.

    Rule positioning... you mean the order of your QOS selectors?

    IIRC, you need to have more 'important' traffic selectors first, so I would separate VOIP from video, and put VOIP first. If the video is videoconferencing, then put that second... if it's netflix or whatever, put it after games.

    Like I said earlier, I don't create selectors for everything, e.g. you probably don't need one for mail or IRC unless they're using too much bandwidth.
