Advice needed: DC, static routing and DG

Hello,
I am migrating from Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 DC. Our previous DC was configurated by a consultat before my arrive. He configured, in Win 2003, this static routing:

Destination: 0.0.0.0
Network: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (the ip address of firewall, previously Zyxel, now Astaro [:)])

Each client used Win2003 IP address for Default Gateway and DNS server.

Considering that now I have to reconfigure my entire network, I'd like a suggestion from Astaro community. Which would be the best configuration? It's better to continue to use Win2008 for both DG and DNS?

Hey Eclipse,

We run five offices using 2003r2 & 20008r2 DC's and I never saw a reason to need to use the Windows box as the DG for the network. They provide DNS & DHCP to be sure but never acted as a DG. Even when the one DC in head office ran our VPN (pre-Astaro), we still didn't.

If anything I'd say keep Windows as far away from routing & firewall duties as possible. Windows is a general purpose Server operating system with a known history of security holes, and certainly not a router OS (despite what the folks over a MS Forefront would have you believe). [H]

Do you have 1 or multiple network segments? Any network switches or hubs in use?
