Can't block Instant messaging

I have been trying to block instant messaging programs all night and for some reason the Astaro gateway is not blocking them. I have tried creating packet filter rules and using the application control but these are not working.

I have been trying to block one host to test it however it doesn't block the programs. I can confirm that this client is not listed in any exclusion rules at all.

Any help appreciated

    Apologies, let me clarify in my previous company we used the Astaro gateway to prevent users from downloading stuff from File Sharing sites however these sites were not blocked. Users were allowed onto these sites however when attempting to download from theses sites connections were simply dropped. I just don't recall how we did this.

    Any ideas ?
