IDENT Proxy

Do I need to enable this IDENT proxy? I have just the Mail security receiving incoming mail and forwarding to mail server and SSL and L2TP/IPsec VPN services facing the internet along with a windows Home server 2008 port forwarded with default port 80, 443, and 4125. I get a lot of false reports from security scans pointing to this port and if it not needed for anything then I will turn it off.

When would I need to turn this on?

Thanks

  • I've found that sendmail mailservers work faster if you create a PacketFilter to REJECT all outbound ident traffic (from your mailserver).
If you just DROP it, then sendmail will keep trying until a timeout is reached, and it does this for every incoming email.
