Need help in basic troubleshooting of an app that won't work

I am running Astaro 8.203 on a home network, which replaced a SonicWALL firewall.  Our kids play a game which stopped working after installing the Astaro.

I don't want this thread to be about how to get this one app working... rather, I would like some guidance on what general steps one should follow when trying to troubleshoot a problem like this.

On my old SonicWALL, when something didn't work right, I just looked at the Log (only one), and could usually spot the problem in short order.  Astaro has awesome logs, but so MANY!  I don't even know where to begin looking, there are so many.

If you were in this position, what would you try first?  What logs would you look at, and what would you look for?

    It seems the game does not play well with the Proxy running in Transparent Mode. Most probably it's the AV scanning that causes the interference. Actually the traffic is *not* blocked by the Firewall/Proxy, it's the application that cannot handle the Proxy returning 'unexpected' stuff like an 'AV scanning in progress' page. This is is a general problem with the Transparent Mode and affects many other programs as well, especially their integrated updating mechanisms: Skype, Flash, Firefox, Windows Updates, Nero and many more.. Creating exceptions is your only chance here - or switch to Standard Mode and enforce all your browsers actually use it. That's why we already ship a few default exceptions.
