Setting up Exchange 2010 with Mail Security using my registered domain MX record

I have been trying to find a solution for this for the last two days and has been driving me crazy.

So I have an astaro firewall setup and running smoothly, the external interface is a DSL connection and this updates my domain hostname ip address automatically via a DynDns Service. Here's my DynDns host info:

Mail Exchangers: mniexchange01.mnisystems.co.uk

mnisystems.co.uk A-record
mniexchange01.mnisystems.co.uk A-record
www.mnisystems.co.uk

I have setup Microsoft Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 R2 and it is working properly internally as internal clients are able to send and receive emails without any problems. I cannot however send or receive emails to external addresses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using the Mail security (Proxy), allow your exchange server for relaying over it and configure ASG as smarthost on your exchange.

If you send directly, create a allow pcketfilterrule for otgoing Mailtraffic from your exchange and make sure, that a Masquerading rule exists on ASG.

That should do the. Trick...

I have managed to get emails to send out now however I am unable to receive emails. I get the following error 550 Access denied (not in relay or upstream list).

Did you setup allowed relays? If your exchange server is receiving emails from an ISPs mail server, then you will need to set it up as a smarthost.

Shouldn't the email be directing straight to me instead of my ISP due to my MX record ?

It depends. If this is a home type of connection, most major ISPs actively block direct SMTP connections to keep users from running their own mail servers. If you want it unblocked, you would need to spend the extra $100-$200/month and get a business-class connection. In the US, I know that Comcast Cable, Verizon DSL, and Frontier DSL all do this.

Look in 'Mail Security >> Mail Manager' on the 'SMTP Queue' tab. If there are emails in there waiting to be delivered, I suspect you need to add the IP of the Astaro's "Internal (Address)" as a Smart Host in your Exchange configuration.

PS Yes, I was able to telnet to your Astaro's SMTP Proxy.
