Running QoS on Bridge mode

Hi All,

I just installed ASG Software Appliance on my device and updated to v8.201. Then, I bridged its two interface update as br0. I then configured QoS. Here is what I configured:

1. QoS: Status:
- enabled BRIDGE interface (Limit Uplink, Download Equalizer, Upload Optimizer all checked)
- Downlink kbit/sec = 102400
- Uplink kbit/sec = 102400

2. QoS: Traffic Selectors
- Source: ANY
- Service: ANY
- Destination: www.speedtest.net.sg (DNS host)

3. QoS: Bandwidth Pools
- Bandwidth: 512
- Specify upper bandwidth limit : 512
- Checked Traffic Selector (item 2 above).

If I go to www.speedtest.net.sg and perform a 'speedtest', my download and upload is more than 512kb/s.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 33938 kbps (4242.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 40975 kbps (5121.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

How do you configure QoS on a bridge interface? I was able to do this if my interface wasn't bridged (WAN interface and LAN interface with NAT enabled). I tried swapping the source & destination in item 2 above but no difference. [:S]

    You're in a losing battle...  One of the capabilities you lose in bridge mode is QoS.

    This is so sad. Imagine dropping the Astaro between a competing firewall and the core switch, I can do QoS, HTTP proxy, P2P and reporting at the same time. What an advantage that would be. Had anyone submitted a change request/new feature?

    How about if I configure the Astaro like a proxy? One of it's interface configured with  a private IP and IE's proxy setting changed to proxy through it. Would QoS work this time or would be only QoS for upload and not download?

    I just got word from Astaro and they told me that this inability is a bug since v8.0x.

    QoS over bridge is not working since V8.0x. Target version to make this working is V8.300.



    I installed v7.507 and tried the same settings but it doesn't work. I also changed the traffic selector so that it matches all traffic (source: any, dest: any, service: any) and still the same. Upgraded to 7.511 but still the same. So, this was never working since v7 too. How can that be a bug?

    so this is something that used to work and is now broken in v8?  ouchies.

    Hi, it is possible to do QOS when using the proxy, but if the proxy is the ONLY traffic through the firewall, then QOS can't optimize relative to your other internet traffic.

    Also note that setting a limit of 512kbps would affect the AGGREGATE of all connections; it's not a per-connection limit.

    Currently, you should consider putting Astaro in your network without bridging.

    When you mention proxy, do you mean setting the Astaro's HTTPS proxy as standard? So on my browser setting, I change my proxy setting to use the Astaro? So QoS will work? Am I right to say that?

    I just understand from Astaro that QoS will work either in routed or NAT mode. V8.300 with QoS in bridge mode should be out Q1 next year.

    I'm saying that QOS may not do what you need in a proxy-only configuration.

    What do you want QOS to do?
    e.g. balance VOIP, http, and other traffic?

    Hi Barry,

    It is mostly going to be QoS for HTTP and some application based on v8.2 application control list (Facebook/YouTube).

    QoS through a bridge never worked in ASG. I opened this mentioned issue already a while ago internally and tested shortly ago a modified 8.103 special rpm for me, which made QoS through a bridge working. from this view QoS through a bridge is technically at least possible.

    So now it's probably a PM / Developer / QA decision if and when this  feature *maybe* will find officially it's way into ASG...

    Some more votes here may help to speed up decisions [:D]
