Packet Filter Question for Network Printing

I have a Brother MFC-8460N that I can either configure statically or DHCP.  I have mapped the MAC address to receive a specific IP as I plan to use assign it a static IP anyway.  Either way, I have run into issues installing drivers to print to it through ASG 8.103.  

I have created a packet filter rule identifying my "internal network" is the source, "network printing" as the service and tried both "LAN range" and "Device IP" as the destination.  The Action is set to "allow" and the rule is "enabled".  Is there anything I need to do?

I know the network printing was working as I had configured with a Static IP at another small office a few days ago using a small Linksys gateway.  Do I need to enable something else?

    The network printing definition is just a few ports that are commonly used, but different printer manufacturers can and frequently do use other custom ports.  The two means that you can use to determine if this is the issue is to consult Brother's support website and documentation to see what ports are required for that model and to review your Astaro packet filter log to find if something is being blocked.  I would also check the IPS log in case a rule is being triggered.

    Is the printer on the same LAN as the clients that would be printing to it and are they all connected with switch "behind" the Astaro?  If this is the case, then you wouldn't even need packet filters because the traffic will never go to the Astaro.  I would really need a better idea of the topology to know.

    If these are Vista or Win7 clients, there are printer driver installation issues in these OSs, due to increased security restrictions.

    The clients are all Windows 7.  And the printer is plugged into a switch.  Strangely enough, even after a few full factory reset's it didn't want to receive its DHCP information from ASG.  So I manually entered the gateway and IP information into the printer.  I still can not complete the Network install or print via anything but USB.  

    I have also disabled the local firewall on the Windows 7 test client trying to install the print drivers.

    You might be running into the wonderful Windows 7 point and print restrictions problem.

    I had the same problem but it was not my Router. [[:)]]

    Go into your printer setup (start fresh install again) an make sure you add
    a static ip (if your network is static) or check dhcp range is correct.

    DHCP should be allowed on the back end of private class number like from 192.168.1.200-254 meaning the end ips ranges will be assigned dhcp so that you won't conflict with other ips.

    I bet once you do this you will be good to go. The IP is just a PRIVATE  class example but most of you use that range 192.168.1.X-254.

    Or just make sure dhcp is on in Astaro. Simple I know right?

    Check your dhcp logs and see if its released and renewed it should be good.

    If that won't work. Call Black and Decker and get the biggest hammer you can find.
