Murmur Server Port Forwarding Issue

Hey Folks,

I just recently switched from DD-WRT to Astaro. With this change, I've unfortunately lost the luxury of UPnP. I have a Murmur (Mumble) Server running on my Ubuntu Server. It's quite similar to that of Ventrilo for all those who aren't familiar. It is set to use port 64738. Given I connect directly to the Ubuntu Server using the Local IP, I connect without an issue. However, when I attempt to connect via the External, this is what I see.

Bandwidth Monitor for interface: ALL
tcp SourceIP 60466 DestinationIP 64738 0 0 48 1

Current Configuration Below.

Murmur Service:
Murmur TCP/UDP 1024:65535 → 64738

DNAT
Traffic selector:             Any → Murmur → External (WAN) (Address)
Destination translation:        Ubuntu Server
Automatic packet filter rule: On
Initial packets are logged:     Off

I'm having trouble seeing anything in the Packet Filter Live Log, but I'm going to assume that it's being dropped. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

    Your DNAT rule looks good. Therefore in my opinion it is likely that since you can connect locally, but can't connect remotely that there are other ports that murmur is using that you haven't forwarded to your Ubuntu server.  I checked briefly, and what little documentation I found suggested that you might want to check the murmur.ini file to make sure that you are using the correct port (though since you can connect locally I would guess that this is set up correctly though it doesn't hurt to check).

    Is there a reason why you used 1024:65535 instead of 1:65535 in your murmur service definition?

    I think it boils down to making sure that every port that murmur needs is forwarded.  Like I said your rule looks good so I don't know what else to tell you from an Astaro point of view.

    I continued to dig into this after I submitted the post, and you actually were spot on with your initial assumption (If only I had went to bed and waited for you to reply).

    What I stumbled onto was that when I changed the DNAT into a Full NAT I was able to connect using the External IP, which let me to believe that it was partially working the entire time; I just had to be physically outside of the network. I say partially here because I also had to add a Packet Filter of Ubuntu Server → Any → Any for the Transmission BT Client to work properly, that I didn't mention here, and since I was working on both at the same time, I can't confirm or deny that it assisted in the resolution. My apologies for the rambling.

    In regards to using 1024:65535 (source ports), my understanding is that 1023 and below are reserved so if you know that you aren't going to be using any of the destination ports, it's unnecessary to include them, like the Mumble Server Service. Obviously if this were a Web Server (80) or SSH (22) then 1:65535 is appropriate.

    Almost all client software connect FROM ports 1024 and above.
    That includes web browsers.

    SOME server software, such as SMTP mail servers, may connect from it's default port, e.g. 25, but this only applies to server daemons.
