Ok here is what i want to do.

I have a cable modem 12/2.  I want to setup a couple of QOS levels.

I do not want to use hard numbers per se allow me to explain

on the internal network i want to have dns, openvpn, ssh on high priority.  I want smtp outbound on low priority.  I want everything else on normal priority.  Any level of QOS is able to use everything if nothing of a higher level is active.

I also have a free wifi network.  I want that entire network on a lower priority(up and down) than everything else.   Wifi should only have a minimum reservation of 512 kilobit down and 128 kilobit up.

I just am having trouble wrapping my head around the way Astaro does things.  I know there's requirements of Astaro so let me know if this is possible..and if you would how i would set this up.

BTW mail server is on 192.168.21.3.  AD/file is on .2.  wifi is 192.168.22.x

    so i have to use hard numbers?  There's no way to let the priorities "float"?

    Hi William, yes, you need to use hard numbers for the guaranteed MIN bandwidths, but if there is extra bandwidth available, services can use more than the min (assuming you don't set a max as well).

    Of course, this does mean you shouldn't over-allocate your bandwidth in QOS.

    Also note that the upload and download optimizers will try to even out services/hosts if you haven't made reservations for them, although apparently you're supposed to turn off the upload optimizer if you are using QOS reservations.

    hard numbers for minimum yes..but otherwise i want the wifi folks to float based purely on priorities.  I just can't wrap my head around how to set this up.  Any chance I can get an example explained that may help?

    I don't know how to give a lower priority to the wifi network, but what I do at home is cap my wifi network to about 1/3 of my total bandwidth, so that any p2p apps by my wifi users won't overly slow down the rest of my networks.

    hrmm..that's unfortunate.  with a competing product i can put that interface on a baseline lower priority so if anything gets going on the primary network the wifi gets throttled.  If the primary network needs everything the wifi get throttled down to it's minimums.  if the no other higher priority traffic is going on then the wifi folks get everything available on the connection.  i'll have to keep looking at astaro's ways of doing things then because a hard upper cap is NOT what i want to do.
