Peer Name Resolution Protocol

Does the Astaro currently support the Peer Name Resolution Protocol or does it plan to be able to in future releases?

It hinders using some Windows 7 features in the Enterprise by not being allowed.

    I don't believe that there's native code to explicitly allow PNRP, but this info might point you in the right direction to set this up yourself manually:
     

    The Peer Name Resolution Protocol requires the following firewall exceptions:[LIST=1]
    • UDP 3540 (Peer Name Resolution-Protocol (PNRP))
    • UDP 1900 (Simple Service Discovery-Protocol (SSDP))
    [/LIST]For Internet synchronization you will additionally need the Tunnel protocol Teredo. This will have to be allowed by the firewall, unless your network natively supports IPv6.

    Thanks for the info Scott!

    I couldn't seem to find those ports or that information very easily.  I tried putting those ports into play and enabling Teredo on the Astaro but still can't seem to get it to work.  Here's what I did, maybe you could tell me if this is correct?

    Packet Filter Rules:
    ANY ->SSDP->ANY
    ANY->PNRP->ANY

    IPv6:
    Disabled 6to4 (Had turned it on yesterday as our ISP doesn't have IPv6 capability yet and thought that would be more suited for our public IP)
    Enabled Teredo(Anonymous)

    Any ideas?

    On another note.....I have also put in a Feature Request with Astaro:

    allow support for PNRP (Peer Name Resolution Protocol (http://uservoice.com/a/63xSH)

    If there is anyone else out there that would like to see this as well (or just wants to support me in my endeavors) please vote for the idea by clicking on the link above.  Thanks!

    What features would those be? I've been testing IPv6 on Win7 & 2k8r2 but aside from HomeGroup (which doesn't apply in AD environments afaik) so far nothing seems to care whether I disabled teredo, 6to4, or IPv6 altogether.

    If you're trying to get a baic IPv6 network running, this is what I did at home and based on testing with HomeGroups and webbrowing(firefox) it seems to work fine. This also assumes you're runnming v8.

    1) For IPv6 I set my astaro to use Freenet6. I have an account (free to join) and logging in with my account they assign me a netblock which Astaro takes one. The other choices for me either didn't work or asigned a single IP to the ASG which seemed kinda pointless.

    2) Enable DHCPv6. It will automatically take the netblock Freenet6 assigned you and use that.

    3) Set the Win7 clients to use DHCPv6 and once they're grabbing IP's, disable the teredo & 6to4 interfaces on the boxes. There's a registry hack you have to google. I also disabled all but my Astaro VPN client's ISATAP interfaces.

    In the end that gave me a native IPv4/6 network that so far the Win7 clients haven't complained about. I haven't done extensive tests on this configuration with AD at work as we don't have our 120's up to v8 yet and management frowns upon testing new tech on the production network. I wonder why?[:D]

    Hey Andrew,

    Thanks for responding to my post. One feature in Windows 7 in peticular EasyConnect for Remote Assistance, doesn't seem to work behind the Astaro.  My understanding is that the Astaro does not support the PNRP protocol which is needed for this feature.  

    I've been playing around with the IPv6 settings on our Astaro including enabling Teredo or 6to4.  Since we have a static public IP available to us, we are able to use Teredo.  

    Both technologies didn't allow the EasyConnect to work.  

    Did you turn on IPv6 Prefix Advertising on the Astaro and/or DHCPv6?

    P.s.  In case anyone is interested in REALLY learning about IPv6 (gonna have to VERY soon) here is a link to a great document i've been reading over the weekend on creating a secure IPv6 network.  The basics of it are.....if you don't completely understand IPv6, don't enable it on your network. It's a whole new way of thinking, different than what we've used and become comfortable with in IPv4.
