Download problems concerning some websites

Hello again,

I'm new to Astaro and have the following problem:

Websurfing and downloading files works fine, but encountered the problem,
that for example a download from the HP Support does not work and ends in a timeout:

That happens when I open the following link and press download.
HP Compaq nx9020 Notebook PC -  Synaptics Touchpad-Treiber - HP Business Support Center

I tried the same with a Fritzbox and it worked without any problems.

I'm only using the Firewall in the moment. No web-proxy or antivirus filtering. 

Could the reason be that I'm using an FTP server behind my firewall and routed the port 21 to it. So if the download is vom an FTP server on the web, the traffic is routed wrong?

Where do you think, is the problem?

    Hi,

    The Astaro firewall to my mind is a two-way firewall: you have separate rules for incoming connections and outgoing connections.  Just because you've defined a rule (at least it sounds like you have) to allow incoming FTP connections from the outside world doesn't mean to say you can't simultaneously use an outgoing FTP connection from your web browser to download content from another FTP site.

    The link you provided appears to be an HTTP link, but then again there's no easy way of telling whether it simply redirects to content on an FTP site or not.  When it does timeout what link shows up in your web browser's address bar?  Does it show the same link as before or does it change to an FTP link?  Are you able to check the firewall logs to see if anything is getting blocked?

    It would also help to know what version/edition of Astaro you're using.

    I encountered some new problems:

    Several sites are not available if the ASG handles the internet connection.

    It is an ASG V8.0.0.3 in an VMware environment.

    The last change was, that I changed the "override hostname" in the VPN settings.
    I have undone this, but the problems remains.

    For example:
    I can't download from HP as mentioned above.
    I can't open Asterisk- The Open Source Telephony Projects | Asterisk
    I CAN open abc.dyndns.org, but I CAN'T open yxz.dyndns.org

    I have two internet connections (different providers).
    The first connection (over fritzbox) works fine. If I plug this one to the Astaro, the problem is there also.
    So I think, the Astaro is the problem. 

    I rebooted it. Now xyz.dyndns.org works again, but Asterisk- The Open Source Telephony Projects | Asterisk still not!

    I'm using Full-NAT rules and dyndns.org hostname.
    And I think, it worked during the last two weeks.

    I can't even ping the non-working web-addresses.
    But I get the IP of the domain translated correctly.

    Please help me!

    Can you tell me the full physical (and virtual) layout of everything in your network?  Is it just your computer currently connected, or are there any others?  Also, which edition of ASG are you using (Essentials, Home Use etc)?

    This only makes any difference if you are dialling into your network (i.e. from a remote location) via VPN.  This won't affect Internet access from inside your network.

    You need to make sure you've properly setup your Astaro gateway to handle two Internet connections, depending on what you want it to do with them.  Is one of them a backup in case the other fails [known as fail-over], or are you planning on using the bandwidth of both connections at the same time [load-balancing]?  I can't say I can help you much more than this since I just make do with one Internet connection [:)].

    The only other thing I can say at this stage is using ASG (or any security gateway, for that matter) inside a virtual machine is not all that easy to pull off if you don't have the correct virtual configuration from the beginning.  I know because I've tried this before for testing purposes.  This is especially true, I find, for the networking side of things (i.e. getting the virtual machine to communicate with the outside world and other hosts), although ordinarily I am able to work around such things myself.  I would say you've also made things that bit more complicated by deciding to use two different Internet connections.
