ASG at Home, Managing bandwidth.

Hi guys, I would like to use ASG at Home to manage the bandwidth for downloading and online gaming. Not sure yet if ASG can do it as I new, but these are the cases.

I have three users who uses youtube heavily, each open multiple tabs at a time for the loading to complete not to mention bittorrent also. Also if some one at tried to play (Like WOW) anything he will be out of luck as most of the bandwidth is taken.

What I am looking for is to use something like a cache to save the downloaded sites on a hard disk and using it if other users requested the same material. Also restrict the bandwidth for these sites or provide specific amount at the time of playing for the user so there will be no lag.

Kindly tell me if I can find what I am looking for and where to do it? I am setup a VM for ASG for testing.

Hi,
1. Astaro does have a caching web proxy

2. Astaro has QOS and bandwidth equalization.
It's not trivial to setup QOS, and it's not a panacea, but it does help.

I'd also recommend setting max bandwidth limits in the bittorrent client(s), so that they don't use 100% of your upstream. I know both Vuze and uTorrent have such settings.

So using QOS I can set the limits base on port? lets say bittorrent is using TCP 6881. Can I make this use full bandwidth when no one is using the internet and restrict it to ex. 50kb if some one is playing on port 3726?

Well, you can't make such precise rules, but you can "guarantee" bandwidth to port-3726, and that does just what you want.
