Packet Filter help

I was wonderingif anyone can help me setup a packet filter to block PlayOn software from automatically forcing an update.  I used PlayOn software for streaming video and TV show.  I know there IP address.   How would I setup a packet filter that would prevent PlayOn from forcing version update and still allow my PC to receive streaming?

    If you know the domain name(s) or IPs of their update servers, you could create packetfilter or proxy rules to block them.

    I only know the host name playon.tv.  I tried creating a PF to block the host and it shows the packet being dropped, but the program still receiving the latest updates.

    Any other suggestions

    So, maybe you have your HTTP/S Proxy in "Transparent" mode and the program is accessing that way?  It sounds like you already have created a DNS Host definition for playon.tv, so add that to the 'Transparent mode skiplist' on the 'Advanced' tab of HTTP/S.  Be sure to remove the checkmark that allows HTTP traffic.

    Blocking playon.tv would probably also block the streaming.

    Try running a sniffer and see if you can isolate the update servers.

    However, if they're using a CDN such as akamai, you won't have much luck.

    Thank you both for your suggestions,

    I'm using "Transparent" mode, but the PC that's running the program was on the "Transparent mode skiplist" with the allow HTTP traffic checked.  I then unchecked the box allow HTTP traffic and added the playon.tv host in the skiplist.  Reinstalled the program and few minutes it automatically received the latest updates.  I don't have a sniffer, so finding the update servers would be difficult.  I appreciate any other suggestion you might have.

    maybe I'm fighting a losing battle.  Never seen a software company that would force an updates instead of allow for manual updates.  Strange business practice.

    You must be running an old version. All the new versions check their updates on port 8080 so you have to explicitly allow port 8080 traffic to reach outside of your network for playon auto update to check for updates. You will loose a lot of functionality running older versions because they release a version every week or so to keep supporting multiple media sites that they support.

    My playon doesn't update itself. It alerts me if I ever relaunch it but I have a dedicated old pc with xp, sp2 that I use for streaming hulu etc. Most of the time I don't even get the update alert.

    May I ask what version you are running?  I've experienced many times of something not working after PlayOn new version release, I've made a copy.  I have 2.59.***x, 3.0.3 - 3.0.8, 3.0.13, 3.0.15 - 3.0.31.  I have a good version I know that's working for me 3.0.19, but when I revert to 3.0.19, then it auto-updates to 3.0.31.  I know that 3.0.xx support iPhone, but I don't really need it.  I'm motly using PlayOn for 3rd party script only, so I'll try 2.59.***x and see if it updates.

    Billybob - you're so right.  I downgrade to version 3.0.3 and no more updates.  Thanks for catching that.
