Hardware or Software for home use?

I'm looking to secure my network down do the security issues in IPv6 when that time comes around. Don't like the idea of nat being removed. 

My home network has 5 PC's and would like to protect them all.

What do you think is better for me.

1. Buy a used Security Gateway 110
2. Build a new PC with two gigabit lan cards and do it that way with the free software. 

Also how much do the subscriptions cost? 

Setup looks like this

Modem>router>

Is this the correct way to make it work.

modem>Astaro PC>router

    For home use I'd go with building a new PC. I built a small Atom based Astaro unit for around $350 and it handles pretty much everything I can throw at it through my DSL line.

    Many of the used 110/120 hardware units you can find on the web are not powerful enough to handle the v7/v8 software. I tested one a few years back that had v7 on it and the unit was anemic at best.

    Also how much do the subscriptions cost?

    The Home Use License, which includes all the subscriptions, is free. 

    Is this the correct way to make it work.

    Astaro includes all the features found in most consumer grade routers so you can ditch the router. You may need a switch on the inside though as most consumer routers have a small built-in 4/6/8port switch.

    The PC i was loking to build looks around 450 with tax and shipping and two Intel gigabit nics and a E5400

    I run DD-WRT On my router so I should be able to use it as as a switch.

    I meant the cost of subs with hardware.

    The used ASGs have been "decommissioned" and cannot be used with paid subscriptions; in order to use them at all, the hard disk must be re-initialized or a specific file must be erased and the device loaded with the software version.  A 10-IP Full-Guard license (includes all of the same things as the home-use license) is about $700US per year.
