Configuring windows to connect through a firewall?

Ok, I want to set up a dedicated firewall for my network but I am having trouble understanding how.

Let's say I install astaro on one of my old machines with 2 NICs, then I would connect the default Gateway (A cable router) to one and a computer I want protected to the other. So far so good right?

Ok, now is the part I am confused on, what next? Do I configure the LAN properties and set the default gateway IP Address to the firewall's IP Address or leave it as the default gateway's IP Adsress?

What I am asking is how do I configure windows xp to connect to the internet through the firewall? Sorry I am still a noob at networking and wanted to do this to help further my knowledge...Also wth is a DMZ? Any help is greatly appreciated, and Thanks in advance! [:)]

Hi,
welcome aboard.

Very quickly.
1/. apply a fixed IP address to your PC similar to the IP address on the ASG internal interface with the ASG as your gateway.
2/. create a Packet filter rule internal (network) -> any (protocol) -> any (all external sites) -> allow (lets any internal device out, but nothing gets is unless you started the connection.).
3/. you will need a NAT rule MASQ - internal network -> external interface
4/. enable DNS add your internal network
5/. then download the manual from within the ASG webadmin and have a read.

5/. Have a look at some of the o ther features and ask further questions as needed.

You could try to do some reading on the net first [;)]

If you really want a book I could recommend this one:
Amazon.com: Networking Basics CCNA 1 Companion Guide (Cisco Networking Academy)…

This starts at the very beginning with cabling standards etc. but also includes TCP/IP basics, which you'll need to control a security gateway like Astaro.
