2 Separate Lans & iTunes

Hi,

I have two separate trusted lans and I have an iTunes server on one subnet and I would like the service to work for both subnets. Currently the two lans work perfectly for all other server, network printer and terminal services and databases, nothing is being blocked.

The iTunes server is working as expected on the main subnet but it is not working on the secondary subnet.

I have tried adding a packet rule to allow port 5353 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder)) to work in both directions but this did not seem to help.

Any ideas?

    Doing a quick Google search, it looks like TCP 3689 may also be required for iTunes sharing.
     
    Anything showing up in either the packet filter or IPS logs?

    Thanks for the try but still does not work.

    It seems that the iTunes service only works within its own subnet. I cannot seem to figure out how to get the service to broadcast into another subnet.

    Any ideas?

    Mike, like Scott says, can you see blocked packets in the packet filter log?

    iTunes Sharing is a mDNS (aka Bonjour) feature. To do that across subnets you have to setup Multicast Routing (PIM-SM) between the subnets in question.

    Can you elaborate on that? How to do that without any external Multicast Router?

    Just activating PIM-SM on astaro on all relevant interfaces and adding a PM-SM Route for network 224.0.0.251/32 (mDNS) to the Apple device (for example Time Capsule) does not work as you need an external RP Router as I read.

    Yes can someone with knowlage please describe how to set up simple Multicast routing. It seems unduly complecated, and the documentation is not a huge amount of help.

    You are absolutely right. I even got an email from Astaro support telling me to come to the forums to check to see if anyone had set this up before when I asked for assistance with setting something up with say a Linksys router.

    I think isenberg answered the question on the 12th of JAN - you need an external router.
