dhcpcd[6476]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response

Hi

My Astaro Internet Connection simply failed yesterday.
Checked on Astaro and

1) Cable Modem STATE Down LINK Down.
2) Attempt to Renew under Interface and it remains 0.0.0.0
3) Checked System Logs and it shows the following.
4) Suspected problem with Cable Modem Provider.
5) Shutdown Cable Modem completely.
6) Power Up Cable Modem completely.
7) Shutdown the Interface and Turn on the Interface.
8) Reboot Astaro.
9) Shutdown Astaro completely....power up again.
10) All the above does not get a IP properly.
11) Connected my Laptop Directly to Cable Modem (With the same network cable) and it works so it does not seem to be ISP Problem.
12) This happened in the past too, what I did was Reinstall Astaro and Reload my Backup Configuration and it works.
13) Now about a year, it happend again.
14) Do you think it could be because Astaro runs on Hard Disk and therefor sometime like a windows machine, some files is corrupted etc thus need to reinstall?
15) I am downloading the latest 7.504 ISO to reinstall but since I seen it before thus brought up for discussion.
16) I tested other routers such as Linksys, 3Com with my cable modem and it all works.
17) It is not a NIC Failure too as it does work fine if I set it to Static IP and it would be UP.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for bothering to read and reply.

    - I went ahead to do a 100% Reinstall from a 7.504 ISO.
    - Installation completed successfully.
    - I reloaded my Backup Configuration and problem persist.
    - Thus now I think it may be that particular NIC that may be faulty.

    - To test it, I reset Astaro to Factory Default.
    - I configure Another NIC and 100% Exactly the same DHCP Time out problem.

    - I went back to my Cable Modem and tested again
    - Direct Connection to my Laptop works.
    - Direct Connection to a 3COM Router Works.
    - Direct Connection to Linksys Router Works.
    - Direct Connection to a Buffalo Router Works.

    - I also got my Service Provider to "flush" me out of their network and did the standard "Signal Reset" etc.

    The problem still persist.

    On one hand it seems Cable Modem is fine.

    One the other hand, I cannot see what is failing on Astaro.
    - The software is 100% Clean Install.
    - I tested BOTH Default Configuration and Backup Configuration.
    - I tested configuring DHCP on another NIC on the same server.
    - If I configure a STATIC IP on the Interface, it is UP.
    - I also connected the NIC to the LAN Port of my 3Com Routers just to see if Astaro can get DHCP from 3COM and that works.

    So it seems the problem is Astaro Cannot Talk to Cable Modem.

    Very strange, the day it breaks, No changes had been made.
    The very last change I did to my Astaro was during the Astaro's own IPS Pattern issue about 1 week ago.

    I am now just keeping Astaro to keep trying on the Cable Modem and hope one day it works.....I seriously ran out of options.

    By the way, can Consumers Buy one of those ASG 110 /120 and pay accordingly?

    The home license doesn't work with the ASG appliances.  The only way to use it is to FDISK the hard drive and install the software version.

    Just another off-the-wall thought... I remember last year that others with HP servers had strange problems until they turned hyperthreading OFF in the BIOS.  As I recall, the problem is not limited to HP.

    The other idea was one I first saw suggested here by BarryG.  Ask your ISP/modem supplier what MTU they are using - maybe you need to change that setting on the 'Interfaces' tab.  If that's OK, then, on the 'Hardware' tab, try disabling 'Auto-negotiation' and setting to a fixed speed at half-duplex.

    - It is kind of hard to get such settings via ISP.
    - They generally would tell you if it works with a normal computer, that is it.
    - Any common numbers? Mine is 1500 currently.
    - I will play with those Auto Duplex etc, it had been working for Years since Version 5 / 6 on the same hardware.

    - I am also downloading other firewall softwares such as IPcop, Untangle, Endian etc just to confirm my hardware is fine.

    - With regards to buying a ASG, License Aside ( Assume I am willing to pay corporate license etc even for home use just to learn)

    The reason I am looking at buying a ASG Hardware is because
    1) I can learn and understand how these ASG Hardware works and therefore would be more confident to deploy at work place etc as certain things such as how to load the firmware etc via USB key etc can only learn with the actual hardware.
    2) It is much smaller hardware compare to a HP Server.
    3) It does not clog so much dust, HP Servers, the front vents, internal and the fan at the back does clog a lot of dust.
    4) It is not as noisy
    5) It is a lot more portable.
    6) Can play with those HA, Load Balancing, Fail over etc.
    7) Can play with those Site to Site VPN etc.

    Keep you all update on how things goes, downloading those ISO for other firewalls now...

    Hi All,

    Just to share with you all,

    1) The Good News is my Astaro is back Up [H]

    2) The Bad News is I did my configuration from Scratch and I do not have a idea what is wrong. [:S]

    - I have 03 NIC
    Eth0 LAN
    Eth1 WAN (DHCP Cable Modem)
    Eth 2 DMZ 

    After replacing cable modems, network cables, tested with laptop and normal router connected to be fine, the problem is 100% Isolated to my HP Server.

    1) Reinstalled Astaro from Scratch with the idea of Eth1 is Faulty and use Eth2 as my WAN.  Absolutely same problem and this card was practically idle as I do not have anything in DMZ.
    It really is the same error as Eth1 whereby DHCP Broadcast did not get a reply.
    BUT Eth1 which I configure as my LAN works fine so it is hard to believe it is a faulty hardware. and Eth2 simply does not work.

    2) Reinstalled Astaro again, this time I use Eth0 as DHCP and Eth1 as my LAN.
    It works ! Simply works.

    3) Assuming maybe my ISP side "reset something etc" which somehow works, I again set Eth1 as my WAN and it fails, Eth2 as my WAN and it fails, ONLY Eth0 can work.

    4) Reconfigured from scratch as reloading my backup and "adjust" accordingly is far too painful as you cannot just reallocate those WAN, LAN, DMZ across the hardware etc.

    5) The GOOD thing was all along when I post, I typed in very detail thus some special configuration, I refer to my post and redo it again.

    so the good news is I am back online.

    and I seriously do not have a idea why Eth1 and Eth2 simply does not work with cable modem anymore.

    Those are different brand NICs from the one that works, right? I'm willing to bet it's a speed / duplex issue when it's connected to that particular brand of cable modem; I've seen similar situations before where autonegotiate just did not work, ended up manually setting one end of the connection, or both, to 100Mb/s / Half Duplex.  Too late now, but ifconfig will sometimes show errors when this is happening.

    My Card Details as follow.

    I did test setting my cards to 10, 100, 1000, Static Speed, Half, Full etc prior to reinstalling and I also did the same when I set Eth2 to be DHCP.

    It is also strange that it just break on one fine morning.

    Below is my Original Configuration that had been working for years before it simply broke.

    LAN eth0 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express]

    WAN eth1 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705_2 Gigabit Ethernet]

    DMZ eth2 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705_2 Gigabit Ethernet]

    Below is my CURRENT Configuration to get things working.

    WAN eth0 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express]

    LAN eth1 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705_2 Gigabit Ethernet]

    DMZ eth2 [Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705_2 Gigabit Ethernet]


    ETH1 and ETH2 are add on PCI (I forget what type of PCI) NIC Cards on the HP Server.

    ETH0 is the build in NIC on the board.
