How to port forward ????

Can some please give me step by step on how to port forward from my machine to the outside world .I tryed and just can't get it to work .[:S]

    What i want to do is as follows .
    I have a program i need to open a port on the program will not connect to the server on the internet .For some reason it does not work for me .I have had problems with opening ports on alot of these linux and unix firewalls .
    The other question i have is can opendns be use in astaro ?
