Hi,

I am having a problem with the licensing on ASG Home Edition. How can this be fixed?

There are two limits that don't make sense and will probably prevent me from using it. The first limit, the incredibly low connection limit. My daughter some times watches TV shows via the internet and this spikes the connection limit for just herself at just over 500. That's one user! We are constantly hitting the ceiling on this.

Secondly, the user limit. I did not think this would be a problem at all as there are only four people using the internet so having a user limit of 10 did not seem like an issue at all. EXCEPT for the way ASG counts users! It sees everything with an IP as a user and is not smart, so...my Xbox is a user, my two access points, my two NAS's, my two servers my four test virtual machines...should I go on? I usually run with a /26 network to accommodate all the flux that I experience on my home network.

From Smoothwall (PolarExpress), and the likes of all the others, they do not impose these type of restrictions let alone extremely tight restrictions, so why does ASG? I understand the need to want to protect it's usage but many many companies, including antivirus - who to me have more at stake, use registration and trust the end user to keep their end of the bargain.

I understand that I may be a little heavier user than some, not many but some, so I would understand if you wanted to charge me to extend the limits so I can actually use it. I have said this before in another place on the forum, I can purchase a cheap consumer router for $30 and get 4000 connections and unlimited IP's so what would ASG do to provide an extension of their product for non business users?

The one thing that I love about the ASG over any other offering is it's security, the security is the best and the reporting is a very nice feature too. This is what sets this appliance apart from the rest.

    Since yesterday, the User/IP limit is extended to 50, not 10 anymore. You have to download your license key again in "My Astaro" and update it on your box.

    I sometimes had up to 4000 Connections without any problems with my Home-User box.

    Sorry I posted this in the wrong place, I could not find a delete or move option.

    I was looking around for another post when I saw the licensing forum and I saw that I was not alone in my plight.

    I was able to load a 50 user license which should be enough room for everything, thanks Astaro!

    Now if we could move the connection limit that would be great.

    One user comments on the licensing forum was very valid. Even though this is a great product being provided for free it will cause the proliferation of it's use in the work place.

    Hi, I don't know what program your daughter is using, but it sounds like a P2P app. Most P2P apps have settings for how many connections they will make, perhaps you could check hers.

    I run eMule AND Vuze (bitTorrent) clients simultaneously and don't have any problems with high connection usage.

    I just read this thread about licensing for the "home" edition.

    Well, I' m thinking about trying it for my uses. In former time I worked with CP Fw 1 in a (little bigger) company. On one hand it's to expensive for me as private user with a /29 subnet of official IP addresses. 

    On the other hand I'm using IPCop for a couple of years now and am satisfied in general. But, I'm missing the comfort which the CP Fw-1 grants to me. 

    Therefor I decided to switch over to a more recent solution, let's say endian or ipfire. Then I read a comparison of three fw solutions where Astaro won over both other. 

    Actually I thought about testing Astaro some time before when there was a free CD in German computer magazine c't. But this was at a time when there could only ten IP adresses be protected by the home edition.

    In the newer comparison mentioned above I read that there are now 50 IP addresses protected what will actually (over) fulfill my needs. But I don't how these 50 addresses have to be structured. And for this questions I need some help/reply before I'll install Astaro Home Editon.

    So how do Astaro count the 50 prototeced addresses? Only active devices/connections which really go out throught the firewall? Or all really used physical devices and VMs with own IP addresses? Or do they calc them on the size of the subnets?

    Let's make an example. Let's say I have one ISP connection with /29 subnet of official IP addresses outside the firewall. Let's assume there are inside three nets /24 nets, i.e. LAN, DMZ (perimeter net) and extranet (WLAN). 

    In the DMZ are 3-5 IP addresses in use, in the extranet 3-4 and in the LAN 5-10 (including printers and VMs).

    So can I use the "home" edition out of the box to protect this environment or do I have to resize my /24 subnets to /28 before?

    Any help/hints/tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Astaro only counts the devices/IP-adresses which go out through the firewall, it doesn't depend on the used subnet.

    You just have to remove the astaro as the default gateway on the devices you don't want to be counted.

    So you can have a virtual network with 1000 VMs, as long as no one uses the astaro as the default gateway, they aren't counted.
