DNAT very slow

just testing out the virtual appliance on ESX4. The astaro has 3 nics 2 are conencted to the same internal network and the other conencted to the external network

I ahve put in some rules to port forward https to a web server, also a virtual machine. when downloading a file from the web server I only seem to get a transfer rate of 5KBs. If I attach the webserver directly to the external network using the smae physical nics as the astaro applaiance i get 500kbs.

Any ideas why DNAT would be so slow??

    Have you done a proper configuration of IPS?  If you aren't certain, try disabling it to run your test.  Still, it sounds like you have something misconfigured from a hardware point of view - you also might try playing with the interface hardware definition: fixed speed and/or half-duplex.  Or maybe the MTU.

    Yes, I have tried disabling IPS same result. I will see if I can find any speed settings, but as the virtual applaince was configured by astaro I would have thought they would have got this configured correctly??

    I believe that this is caused by your hardware, and that by changing the settings that work for almost every situation, you can correct for the problem.

    Could be a hardware problem. But if I conenct the web server to the same virtual switch (external uplinks to the internet). This will be using the same hardware as the astaro appliance - in this configuration I go from 5KBs to 500+ KBs

    Understood, but what if the MTU on the webserver and the virtual switch is 1420 and the Astaro interface is set to 1500?

    I have adjusted the mtu on the astaro server to 1420, I now get an increased speed of 10KBs - so in the right direction. The web server is windows 2008, not sure what the default mtu for this is. I will try and find out later tonight.

    the physical nics on the esx server are set to 100mb full duplex (limit set by ISP) no changes to the mtu (not sure if you can on ESX, or if that would only effect the service console)

    i have checked the settings on esx and all uplinks have a 1500 mtu. 

    Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Beyond that, I'd try a different cable.  Maybe you have a configuration issue with the VM, but I'm really ignorant when it comes to that!

    I know this problem with Windowsboxes on ESX
    Without vmware tools , the virtual nic runs as an amd something with 10Mbit, even if its connect to giga, and nic performance was very poor.

    Hi, the windows machine has the tools installed. If I connect directly to that windows machine the speeds are fine. The tools on the astaro box are marked as out of date maybe I could try updating them? are there any instructions for doing this on the astaro appliance?
