I used to have a LAN -> ANY = ALLOW rule when I started out using firewall and as all of you know we need to move on to control out going traffic too which is why I removed the LAN -> ANY = ALLOW Rule.
Some problems I faced are stuff like IRC, SKYPE, MSN would break.
Thus after doing research, I found out there is such a Feature known as SOCKS and I managed to get things to work.
But I am wondering if enabling SOCKS is more secure or I should do it rule by rule.
Example: IRC I can either enable a IRC Rule or use Socks, so which is more secure?
Example: MSN I can configure socks too but when my laptop is not on my home network, it may attempt to connect to a socks server and attempte to authenticate, in such scenario, won't my username and password for socks be on other people network
Example: on SKYPE, I can get things to work but somehow calls quality can only sustain for a few seconds and break to a point it is not usable.
Thus seeking advice how do you all use SKYPE, MSN, IRC etc securely while not doing the LAN -> ANY Allow way and if my client store the sock authentication when it is on other wireless network, is it encrypted or it is plain text?
