Creating Users Manually

Hello all.

So, I am trying to create users manually, ( i have no AD, as i am running a SME server ) I have already added their names, and passwords, and now I would like to bind them to the IP's of their local machines.

This is all so that I may create rules for certain users as what time of the day they will be allowed to view certain websites.

I have the individual Ip's, Therefore I also Have the Individual Mac Address's, so how do I put these into astaro, so that I can group them into different groups?

    Ah, My apologies BALfson.

    Astaro version is: 7.401,
     and the Http proxy status is [:$]n (Green) 
    with allowed Networks being, Internal.

    Before spending time on that, what about configuring AD on your server?  That seems to be available now, and is likely something that you'll want to do in the future if you have more than a few users.

    If you have only a few users, and they have fixed IPs, then you don't even need to have them defined as users, force them to login to the Astaro, etc.  You can create a host definition for each person/computer, e.g., David at 192.168.33.3.  Now, you create a Profile for each "user's" host definition and do filter assignments with no group specified - that activates the assignment for anyone in the network to which the profile applies.

    Thanks for your reply, and is, as always  (I have read alot of your posts and they have all helped) informative.

    My SME server is a Linux-Based server, run with Debian, another Linux-based server. As of now, I have no Active Directory ( as it is Windows Owned ), And perhaps, I will build one eventually, in a intended windows server (more than likely within a XEN shell).

    I have about 80 users and was wondering if there would be another way of authenticating them to Astaro? Anything within Astaro to be able to pull from a SME server? Or is Manual my best bet?

    I will be working with large groups of users to put restrictions on.

    does the SME use an LDAP server internally which we could connect to?

    I was thining about LDAP, too, Gert, but then I googled on: SME server active directory

    I found: Advanced Samba - SME Server

    If he hasn't installed LDAP yet, then going straight to AD would seem to offer the best reward/effort ratio.

    MaJ13X, LDAP wouldn't be as flexible for you overall as AD, but if you can live with designing it around the structure necessary for Astaro groups and HTP profiles, then that is the next-best choice for you.

    You are another of my favorite authors here.

    I guess with all points pointing to AD, that's what I will do and then try to authenticate users to that. 

    Gents, I will re-post after building the AD, so thanks for all the good help!
    And the help steering this in the right direction.
