Xbox 360 as media center extender will not connect to PC with Astaro dhcp

Hello eveyone.  I am new to the forum and to Astaro.  So far I love the product.  I am using it at home with 2 pc, one home server, 2 laptop, linksys media extender, and an xbox 360 media extender.

everything is set up and works wonderfully.  

The only problem I am still having is as soon as I hook up the Astaro on my network my xbox will not see the media center PC.  They are booth on the local network and should not be affected by the Astaro but if I remove the astaro and let my linksys wrt350n give out the ip address the media center works.

My network is set up like this.

Cable modem -->  Astaro --> Linksys wrt350n (set to not give out dgch) --> internal network hard wired to the linksys.

I was hoping that someone here would have an idea of whta is going on.  I have turned on the media streaming button in the astaro and playe daorund with setting but I did not think that astaro would affect the internal network.

I am at my wits end here.  I have spent well over 40 hours this week trying to get this to work and have not yet managed to figure it out.  So for now I have taken the Astaro off of my network, set the linksys back up for dhcp and everything is working fine.  

I am hopeful that someone here has an idea of whta oculd be going on.

    And you've setup the DHCP server on Astaro for the LAN, and the XBOX is getting an IP on the same network as the server?

    Hi barry thanks for the quick reply.  yes the astaro is giving the dhcp and both the meida center pc and the xbox get an ip in the 192.168.2. range.  And they have the same subnet and the same dns.

    My final suggestion would be that your experiment demonstrates that the problem is likely the linksys, and that you should try a simple switch in its place to confirm that.  The problem will then be figuring out how to put the Linksys into a mode that makes it simply a wireless switch instead of a router.

    PS I see you found the solution on another thread.  Apparently, the linksys has some standard settings for game machines, so I was off on a wild goose chase!  Glad you solved it.

    Thanks for the help.  I will switch the wouter out and see if I can get it to work.  I ahve never had a problem with live get the media center part...and this xbox is my main TV solution in my living room.

    I will report back if I find a way to make it work.

    Bob,

    I tried a netgear andanother linksys router, a linksys switch and a netgear switch and still no go.  The only way the xbox360 will see the media center pc if if I take the astaro off the network and use a router instead.  Then everything works fine.  But with astaro on the netowrk eveything works great including my linksys wmce54ag media center extender but the xbox360 will not connect to the pc.

    It looked like that other Xbox thread had the right answer.  Cath linked to a cheat-sheet for gaming systems, and fatwreck15's post gave a complete description of what's needed so the Xbox plays well behind the Astaro.

    Ya i used fatwreck15's setup to get it working with xbox live.  But it still does not help with the media center extender part.  I am not sure why Astaro afects it because it is on the local network trying to access another pc on the local network.

    Are you using names or IPs to connect?

    Any address ending in .255 is normally a broadcast address.
    This is not a problem, and is in fact normal in a LAN.

    If you don't want to clutter up the Astaro logs with that, you can create rules to drop the traffic without logging.
    Search these forums for broadcasts for more info.

    Ya I will do that I was just wondering if you saw anything there that would help solve my problem of the xbox360 and media  center pc not being able to talk when the astaro is on the network.

    Ok not sure why but I just deleted a packet filter and entered it back in (same one) internal --> any -->any  and it now works.  I have absolutly no idea why but it does.  Thank you soo much for your help.
