Xbox 360 as media center extender will not connect to PC with Astaro dhcp

Hello eveyone.  I am new to the forum and to Astaro.  So far I love the product.  I am using it at home with 2 pc, one home server, 2 laptop, linksys media extender, and an xbox 360 media extender.

everything is set up and works wonderfully.  

The only problem I am still having is as soon as I hook up the Astaro on my network my xbox will not see the media center PC.  They are booth on the local network and should not be affected by the Astaro but if I remove the astaro and let my linksys wrt350n give out the ip address the media center works.

My network is set up like this.

Cable modem -->  Astaro --> Linksys wrt350n (set to not give out dgch) --> internal network hard wired to the linksys.

I was hoping that someone here would have an idea of whta is going on.  I have turned on the media streaming button in the astaro and playe daorund with setting but I did not think that astaro would affect the internal network.

I am at my wits end here.  I have spent well over 40 hours this week trying to get this to work and have not yet managed to figure it out.  So for now I have taken the Astaro off of my network, set the linksys back up for dhcp and everything is working fine.  

I am hopeful that someone here has an idea of whta oculd be going on.

    And you've setup the DHCP server on Astaro for the LAN, and the XBOX is getting an IP on the same network as the server?

    Hi barry thanks for the quick reply.  yes the astaro is giving the dhcp and both the meida center pc and the xbox get an ip in the 192.168.2. range.  And they have the same subnet and the same dns.

    Do you have a packet filter rule like 'Internal (Network) -> Any -> [Media Center PC] : Allow'?

    Tony can the other devices see each other? Have you turned off any firewalling that the linksys is doing so that it just acts as a switch?

    Bob, from the picture he drew, it doesn't look like astaro is doing anything for the internal network besides leasing IP addresses so he won't need any rules to direct internal traffic. Unless... he doesn't have the linksys configured right as a switch and astaro is dropping all the broadcasts etc.

    Tony, is everything including astaro plugged in the linksys' LAN ports or do you have astaro in the WAN port?

    It would be interesting to see the IP and gateway on the Xbox as it sounds like it's still responding to the gateway of the linksys.  Then again, maybe it's the ARP table.

    Thanks for the quick response.  The ip of the Xbox is 192.168.2.248 and the gateway is 192.168.2.100...xboxlive works great but i still can not see my media cetner pc

    Sorry, I meant the MediaCenter PC, not the Xbox.

    Also, you may need to do something with the linksys to clear its ARP table.  I would especially suspect the ARP table if .100 was also the IP of the linksys when it was in router mode.

    It is 192.168.2.250 and 192.168.2.100 for the media center pc.

    The linksys 350n router ip address is 192.168.2.3 and its dhcp is disabled and all nat firewall is disabled.   if that is what you mean by the arp table being .100

    Ah ha!  The Linksys is still in router mode?!?  We thought it was in switch mode, or are you saying the wan port of the linksys is not connected to anything and you can't ping 192.168.2.3?

    oh and in the linksys 350n router the dynamic routing is also turned off

    Nothing is connected to the wan port fo the linksys and I can ping 192.168.2.3.

    Once you have everything set up with the Astaro, and the MediaCenter PC is unreachable, leave everything on, but turn off the Astaro.  Now, all of the devices will have IPs assigned by the Astaro, and you should be able to get to the PC from the Xbox if the problem is the Astaro.

    I'm guessing you won't be able to reach it, and that will confirm that you've configured your Astaro correctly.

    With the Astaro off the xbox will not reach the pc either.  The only way I can have the xbox360 reacxh the pc is to take astaro out of the network and use the linksys 350n to do dhcp and then everything works.  I just love Astaro so far and would like the added security it gives me.  I have manually put in the ip, dns, gateway in the Xbox360 too, although it was gettting the ip from astaro anyway and it would work on the internet with xbox live too.  Any other ideas?

    My final suggestion would be that your experiment demonstrates that the problem is likely the linksys, and that you should try a simple switch in its place to confirm that.  The problem will then be figuring out how to put the Linksys into a mode that makes it simply a wireless switch instead of a router.

    PS I see you found the solution on another thread.  Apparently, the linksys has some standard settings for game machines, so I was off on a wild goose chase!  Glad you solved it.
