How to implement traffic shaping

Hi,

on our asg 425 with an 16.000 kbit ADSL I noticed,  that internet is very slow when upload has high utilization.

Is there a way to prioritize data packets so that an upload will not slow down the downloads?

    With ADSL, isn't that determined by the ISP?

    Have you checked the MTU and other hardware issues?

    Maybe the problem is that the request packets from the users aren't getting out.  If you can isolate the source of the high-utilization uploads, you could create a QoS rule on the External interface that limits that source to 75% of the available upload bandwidth.

    Interesting problem.  Please let us know the solution.

    Unfortunately traffic shaping is not determined by ISP.

    The source of the high-utilization upload is email. When turning on QOS an limiting the bandwith for smtp to 128 kbit, internet will be fast again.

    But I am looking a way that dynamically controlls uplink. Any idea?

    Our ISP guarantees us minimum bandwidth for download regardless of the usage of the upload pipe, so that still might be the problem.  Do you have such a guarantee?

    Did you try my second idea with the Internal interface above before limiting the bandwidth of smtp to 128kb?  Turn your 128kb rule off to test my suggestion.

    If that doesn't work, then leave your smtp rule off and try adding a QoS rule for the External interface that guarantees a minimum amount of bandwidth to 'Web Surfing' from your 'Internal (Network)' to 'Any'.

    As we do not have a guranteed bandwith I had to assign a smaller upload bandwith for my ADSL interface. (modem says 835 kBits upload is available, but in Status of QOS ADSL interface I assigned 600 kbits).
    I added a bandwith pool for http , IPSEC and HTTPS and now traffic shaping works.
