iChat, Skype can't connect

I just installed ASG V7 and the install went really smoothly. However Skype and iChat are unable to connect. Secure HTTP sites (https) would not load until I switched the web proxy from transparent to normal, however that didn't help Skype and iChat. Neither did adding a pass any packet filter rule. I tried turning off intrusion protection and web filtering features and still Skype and iChat wouldn't connect. In the packet filter live log I could see packets getting dropped but I was unable to pass them using packet filter rules. I had to install Untangle just to get going again but I really want to use ASG.

I have the ASG virtual machine which is not my gateway, it's just something  I've been using to familiarize myself with the system and I've read the docs and searched this forum but I haven't been able to find a solution.

    How did you define the "any" packet filter rule?  A temporary rule such as:
    Source: Internal Network > Service: Any > Destination: Any, logging enabled should allow all traffic and show you the details in the log so you can craft the appropriate permanent rules should help.

    You didn't enable IM/P2P blocking, did you?

    Jack, thanks! the rule I made had both interfaces as "any" and the protocol as "any". I did switch off the im/p2p blocking and it did not help. I even restored to the factory defaults. Though I'm not sure if I saw a masquerading rule. Would one be needed? Would it be set up as a factory default? Thanks! Greg

    You will need a masquerade rule, it should be there if you go through the wizard.  If not, you just need one masquerading the internal network to the external interface.

    Jack, thanks so much. Tomorrow I'll install again and let you know how it goes. We also use gmail imap ssl so the active thread aibout that is of interest too. I forgot to mention that my gmail imap ssl also was not working.

     Thanks again! Today I reinstalled and everything went smooth and it's working great. I found out where things went wrong yesterday. If during the install process one goes with the choice that the installer makes as to which nic should be used for administrative purposes then the installer properly sets up the external network, dns masq, etc. But if during the install process the user manually chooses the other nic then the external network, dns masq (there might be other things as well) don't get set up and have to be done manually.

    Now that I have dns masq set up properly everything is working great. I should have followed the quick start guide the first time. Sorry to have troubled you.
