DNS proxy flush reload

When or how frequently should, or does, the DNS proxy update it's stored data?

The Problem:
A company we correspond with moved their website to a new host and their mail server in house.  Within one hour DNSStuff was reporting the changed info in the DNS zone file when queried.

28 hours later, e-mails sent to this company from multiple different mail servers, each behind a different Astaro (configured to provide DNS), were bouncing.  Meanwhile, multiple e-mails sent to the company from multiple other outside locations, arrived without incident.  The errors indicated that the e-mails that bounced did so due to their being sent to the company's old (previous) IP address.

We then ran DNS lookups on several of the Astaros.  They each reported the old DNS info - and not the new.  After restarting each Astaro, they subsequently reported the correct (new) DNS info.  Note that we hadn't made any other changes.

Question:
So the obvious question: Is the DNS info in the proxy only updated when it's manually flushed, etc.?  What's it take to get it to update automatically (assuming it should)?

    TTL is specified by the authoritative DNS as part of its reply. I don't think there is a way to bypass ttl when using bind as a caching name server so the ttl provided by the authoritative server is used. However your ISP/forwarder might be caching for longer times than the ttl provided. So checking with DNSstuff etc doesn't mean that it has propagated to your ISP/forwarder.
     
    Did you use dig to see what the ttl was for the domain in question. Also the ttl can be different for A records and mx records. Did you check if the mx records had already propagated also?
    Lastly a  /var/mdw/scripts/named restart would restart bind and clear the cache without restarting the machine.

    I'm not sure about the ISP TTL thoughts.  It looks like the TTL's were well within 28 hours (since the DNS changes were made).  And I checked another Astaro this morning.  It had been over 40 hours by that point, and it had the old (stale) info too.

    As I mentioned, the DNS forwarder on each Astaro immediately picked up the change when the Astaro's were rebooted - as noted by looking again in Support | Tools on the Astaros.  Doesn't that mean that the ISP's DNS was already up to date?  They were the first provider listed in the DNS forwarder table.

    And, I should have mentioned it before, but the multiple Astaros that all had the same issue, each of them had a different ISP, and all were getting DNS from their unique ISP's.

    Man, maybe one of the developers can enlighten us both. But from previous experience, I have seen some domain changes happen within an hour or so and sometimes it takes a couple of days. Not really an expert on propagation. 

    Your ttls look good for the new domain, but ISPs do wierd things to take load off their servers and ignoring ttl is one of those things. Sorry couldn't be of more help.[;)]

    BTW here is the static_host.zone-default file from astaro and the ttls are fairly agressive.

    I know what you mean.  My experience with propagation has been that if you change registrars, be prepared to wait.  But if you just change a setting or two in your zone file at one of the top tier registrars, the changes happen pretty fast - sometimes within minutes.

    In this case, that's all that was happening, so the propagation seemed normal.  It's the Astaro DNS's that didn't make the change.
