QOS settings having no apparent effect

I realized that I probably assigned the bandwidth pool to the wrong interface. By default it assigned it to the local internal interface. I moved it to the WAN ethernet interface on the local ASG and it still ran up to the full speed of the T1.

Which interfae should this apply to? Since the traffic would have flowed through both interfaces I would think either would work. In any case I still don't seem to be able to make any noticable impact on the traffic.

What I am trying to do is to limit the impact of large file transfers on other activity such as telnet on the link.

If I correctly understand your situation, you want to limit the impact of file transfers in both directions.  I think you can do this by activating QoS on both ends.  According to the V7 Manual, "shaping of inbound traffic is optimized internally by various techniques such as Stochastic Fairness Queuing (SFQ) or Random Early Detection (RED)," so maybe you won't even need the Traffic Selectors and Bandwidth Pools.  In other words, maybe SFQ and RED in both directions will alone achieve your desired result.

Whatever is done internally just isn't cutting it. If I start a file download it totally creams telnet type traffic and I suspect everything else. Thankfully I'n not putting VoIP on this link. I am just trying to understand how the QOS works. How about a sample configuration somewhere, or something a little deeper than just the simple descriptions of the available settings. I have worked with bandwidth management systems before, and I know configuration can be a trick. Usually you have to get your mind around whatever paradigm the programmers are working from. Thats all fine, and I understand it, I just need the info so I can make use of the features.

QOS Important Note -- the ASL can only control the outbound data flow from itself. This has nothing to do with internal or external interfaces. To control the data flow you have to enter the bandwidth pool limits on the interface that is sending the data from the ASL. This means if you want to limit bandwidth bidirectionally then you have to specify the limit on two different interfaces, one on each side of the ASL in the communication path.

For example
Limiting FTP upload traffic from an external host to an internal server -- this would be done by enabling the QOS functions on the internal port of the ASL (status tab), then creating a traffic selector for FTP, then creating a bandwidth pool on the internal port of the ASL (the outbound port for the upload traffic flow).
Limiting FTP download traffic to an external host from an internal server -- this is done by enabling the QOS functions on the external port, the creating a bandwidth pool using the same traffic selector, on the external port (the outbound port for the download traffic flow).

Now if I can just figure out the bandwidth reservation issues...
