ShieldsUP!

When using Astaro 7.2, I'm unable to go to the firewall testing site, ShieldsUP!. It times out on me.

By default, how much protection do I have? Is the firewall automatically on? 

Is this software making my computer safe to use for the Internet right after it's (Astaro) installed?  Do I have a lot of setting up to do before it's safe?

    I'm assuming you can get to other sites...

    Try disabling or bypassing the http proxy temporarily; maybe it's interfering.
    ShieldsUP is working for me (I don't use the proxy), but it's kinda slow.

    By default, nothing is allowed in or out; you have to setup proxies and/or packetfilter rules to allow any traffic to flow through the firewall.

    You're safe.

    I'm bit puzzled by Astaro's bulletin board. Anyhow, thanks for writing. 

    I was able to surf to a few sites. Being unable to go to ShieldsUP! though, really curtailed any extended surfing after that.  Did try to watch a video at a news site where normally there are never problems. I was unable to view it and it could be the virus checking of Astaro, don't know.

    I've stopped using Astaro for now, because there isn't the time to set it up again. Just too busy. Looking forward to trying your suggestion when there's time; probably tomorrow.

    you are barking up the wrong tree. Astaro  is very safe, by default nothing gets out.
    Shieldsup works fine, I ran it over my system and it reported total stealth.

    You as administrator decide what you let in and out. You build packet filter rules, enable masq and configure it, enable and configure proxies. Create time rules for web or general access. Setup proxy bypass rules, add services to the proxy etc

    Initially couldn't go to ShieldsUP! and posted about it here. 

    Today, was able to go to ShieldsUP!, no problem. After unchecking "firewall is ping visible" it passed. HTTP proxy was on. Yesterday, I picked up a new motherboard for my Astaro box (actually it'll be a multi-use box) that allows a faster processor and more RAM (items I had in reserve) and so did a new fresh installation. Used the Install Wizard and didn't install it the exact the same way. If I could rerun the Install Wizard I could probably figure out what I did differently.

    Windows Media hasn't been a problem so far, but Real Media has been unplayable. I looked at Packet Filter Rules as you suggested, BarryG, and clicked New Rule and then the Service Folder Icon and a list of, I guess, services appeared, and dragged Media Streaming into the Service Bar of the Edit Rule window, activated it and now Real Media is playable.

    I'm posting this using Astaro Security Gateway V7. 

    Thanks to everyone for your help. There's a lot to know, but Astaro has put together a very nice interface to help it along, for sure.
