WAN side MAC address change

I am considering trying out the ASGW, primarily due to what Leo Leport states about his use of the device.


what I would like to know about the use of this GW is does this software have the option to change the WAN facing MAC address.

for those unfamiliar with this technique, it is used for those who tire of continual pings from China and wish to change their public IP.

If this application has this ability, I am so there!

(I am presently using SmoothWallv2 and know it has thus ability)

    There's not a mechanism built into the ASG Software to allow MAC address changes.  However, if you really want to change the MAC address of a NIC, most NIC manufacturers have a utility floppy that you can run (make it bootable) and change the MAC address permanently on the card.

    Thank you BrucekConvergent for your reply; and while I realize most applications have yet to provide a GUI for changing of the WAN side MAC address (though that would be nice) certain files do exist within all gateway applications that control said mac address. Which file needs to be editted to allow such adjustment to be made.

    (as I am expecting ASGW to be linux based, the file in question might be found in the  /etc/rc.d/ directory.)

    I am not sure how changing a mac address will stop you getting ping'ed? In ASG you just disable the reponse and if really paranoid you put a packet filter rule in place to drop the stuff, double protection.
    The pining is only an issue if you respond because you have identified you exist and are then open to attack, if you don't respond then there is no-one there to attack.
