Block Yahoo Messenger

I'm planning to block yahoo messenger only on some users not the entire network?

I tried closing port 5050 on the packet filter but Y! messenger seems to be using smpt port to connect. This port i cant block because we are using this for email.

Oh by the way we are using ASG120 v6.305

  • Could this be the same reason why I am having difficulty blocking access to Hotmail, Yahoo mail and some of the other Yahoo sites (video, music, etc.)? Or is it that I am not using the right URL in the Content Filter?
  • The easy way to do this:

Create packet filter rules that allow / deny access to the Yahoo messenger server sites listed here:  http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger75/messenger/messenger-02.html

You would have to use DNS hostname definitions for the server names, and I would recommend checking back with Yahoo occasionally to see if they've added more servers, etc.

I've used a similar technique in the past dealing with AIM (before IPS was available) issues.
