PowerSchool / PowerGrade

Long time reader, first time poster!

I’ve recently setup a Secure Gateway for my kids school and am having issues with one application, PowerGrade. Has anyone on the board had any experience with PowerGrade and Astaro??

Error message when attempting to connecto to the PowerSchool server:

An error occurred attempting to contact the PowerSchool server. The HTTP response header is incomplete (-100104). PowerGrade will now work in offline mode.

You must be using the HTTP proxy. Is the Server located outside the firewall/lan? Have you tried adding the destination to the HTTP exception list?

The PowerSchool server is indeed outside the firewall. I will try to add it to the Exception List and see if that helps.

Added the server to the HTTP exception list, no luck, same error message.

And you have NAT (if needed) and packetfilter rules setup?

Have you checked the packetfilter logs?

Yes, NAT is in place:
Internal (Network) ==> Internet (Network)

Running the standard set of packet filters:
Web Surfing: Internal (Network) ==> Any
Email Messaging: Internal (Network) ==> Any
Terminal Applications: Internal (Network) ==> Any
DNS: Internal (Network) ==> Any
ping: Internal (Network) ==> Any
PowerSchool (Port 5072): Internal (Network) ==> Any

I'm beginning to think this might be an application issue.

Could be the IPS...

You ought to check the PF and IPS logs.

Hi

this sounds like a routing issue, please can you post the pf logs and the HTTP proxy logs.

Can you confirm if this is just a port 80 app or does it use other ports

If you are using the proxy, you need to create a port definition for the application and add it to the allowed in the http proxy settings.

First off, a thousand thank yous to all who have offered suggestions!

I think I've solved part of the problem. PowerGrade has a Preferences tab where one defines the PowerSchools IP address or Host name. I appeneded the port number, 5072, to IP address and that seems to have helped although not totally solved the issue. I'm going to check both the PF and IPS logs to see if anything is being blocked or dropped while using the app.

I will keep everyone posted!
