Does QOS do anything now?

Hello,

This seems a bit odd but I've been doing some downloads using rsync which is downloading at around 8Mb/s.  That's nice and speedy but I figured I wanted to use QoS to make sure my other traffic has precedence.  IVe set up some simple rules around Web and rsync traffic and found that restricting the upper limit of traffic doesn't do anything.

I decreased the upper limit until it was basically zero yet my traffic keeps humming along at 8Mb/s,

Does anyone know of tools one can use to check whether this protocol is being implemented correctly?

    no matter what i do with QoS, it ignores me.  Bummer too... id really like to prioritize my VOIP traffic.  Any ideas would be great.  No matter what I set, it ignores the settings.  I am able to download at blazing speeds even when i try to limit it.

    the only QOS that has worked from astaro for me is v4.  v5-7 never worked for me despite the many suggestions from folks here..[:(]

    can one of the developers please chime in on this?  i havent been able to get any real function out of QoS and it appears noone else can either.  could we at least get acknowledgement that it is a known problem area and that it is being looked at?  if you all dont think its a problem, tell us your secrets on how you are getting it to work... because it isnt working for me.

    FWIW, Linux does not do traffic shaping ("QOS" on inbound traffic).

    Linux QOS only works on outbound traffic.

    im not sure what to think about that.  i cant even get the QoS to work for outbound.  The only thing i can successfully achieve is getting a very bad result when attempting realistic settings.

    In the following hope setup (comcast ISP with 12Mbit higher tier service), i have attempted the following:

    Cable Modem -> Red NIC

    Orange NIC -> Switch
    Green NIC -> Switch

    with QoS off, all devices get very good speed rates.

    if i turn on QoS for one interface, I get no change in results.  i cant limit and there is no performance hit.  (i imagine this is not supposed to be the case)

    if i turn on QoS for 2 interfaces, I take a HUGE hit in downstream spead (not consistent with the bandwidth settings).

    For instance, I have tried the following:

    Red (12288 down / 640 up) + Orange (8192 down / 400 up)

    if i just implement one of those (not both), no change occurs.  if I implement both, the result is about 768k down instead of 8192 down.

    Sooooo..... what the heck?  Am I doing it wrong?  Or is it not working?

    You're only supposed to setup QOS on the external interface.
