ASG-425 with Extreme L4 core switch routing problem

Hi,

Refering to attached network diagram in which we have ASG -425, Extreme Alpine 3804, L4 core switch, exchange server and other 5 servers.


We faced the following problem : e-mails can't be sent if the gatway of the exchange server and other servers was set to the Core switch 
(IP address 10.254.1.1 ) while ASG-425 (Ip address = 10.254.1.250) is set as the coreswitch gateway.

Although we can still receive emails through SMTP proxy and browse Internet through HTTP proxy in ASG-425.

If the Gatway of the exchange server is changed to ASG-425 IP address, then emails can be sent and received without any problem. 

Our client already have an ISA server which they need to replace  with ASG-425, the ISA setup is working fine with L4 core switch

However, the customer insists on keeping his current routing setup where the gatway of the exchange server is the L4 core switch not the ASG.

    This works as designed. You have two gateways in the same subnet. So this is not a Layer 3 issue. This happens on Layer 2.

    Really, are you sure ?

    Maybe on the switch is port security activated so the asg could reach the server in the same subnet only over the switch (.1) then you must add static routes on the asg for every server in the net 10.254.1.* with the switch (.1) as next hop.

    plz, check the port config on the switch.

    we have the routing tables for ISA & the core switch,

    Have you entered all the routes into the Astaro?
    Have you rebooted the Switch, after you attached the Astaro to the network. (Switch could be realizing,that the mac address of 10.254.1.250 has changed, and could block the port for some time)

    In such a configuration, the switch should normaly send a "ICMP Router Redirect to 10.254.1.250" to the Exchange, because the ASG is "closer" to the target.

    So normaly, I would configure all the routes on the exchange, and point the default route to the Astaro. A switch is for switching and not for routing :-).
    Less trouble, more performance.

    And just for the information, with that position of the Astaro, you will get a horrible spam detection rate (maybe 80%).

    Did you enter a static route on the asg for the network 10.254.0.0/16  ?

    my problem was solved by point the smtp smart host to astaro from the exchang server and the gateway still the core switch.

    my problem was solved by adding the astaro host nane in to the smtp smart host on the exchang server.
