Hi all. I have been looking at the Astaro Security Gateway 110 for a small business I help manage that is looking to keep their network safe. They are on a single DSL line with SBC. VPN is in the future but not for the next year. Their file server currently backs up via. ftp to a remote server nightly.
I hear about Astaro through many online review and of course the Security Now podcast. Do you guys have any suggestions? Is this Gateway the best idea for this application?

    Astaro will certainly work with your setup.

    Depends what you want, and how much you want to pay.

    Personally I'd go with Astaro, it works, the price is good and the support is great.  Try it on a test box first or under VMWare if you want to "try before you buy".

    I would rather just buy a box and put it to work. I am ready to spend $700 for a good solution.

    I'm unsure of the pricing on the ASG machines.  But as said, it will work nicely for your setup.  I am running similar setup here with ASL installed on a PC.

    $700 isn't a very large budget... How many users will be behind the firewall and is any content scanning/virus protection required?

    Using a dedicated PC and installing the ASG software on it is a much cheaper solution than buying the ASG appliance. Your $700 budget should get you perfectly adequate hardware these days. A Pentium4 or Athlon machine in the 3 GHz range with 512 MB RAM and two or three extra PCI Ethernet cards will do the trick.

    Some tips on installation:
    - Use the Ethernet circuit on the PC motherboard for your Internal network.
    - During the software installation, change the default 192.168.2.100 address for the Internal interface to what your implementation requires. This saves you from having to change it later, when doing so becomes more complicated.
    - Use quality, name brand Ethernet cards that are supported by Astaro.
    - Mark your PCI Ethernet cards on the external side of the metal tab with a permanent marker as to what they are used for (WAN, DMZ, WiFi, etc.) that way you can keep the Mac addresses the same if you ever have to rebuild your installation around a different motherboard.
