AOL IM giving me fits

I think I have my house in order as far as all other programs.

I have a basic internal (network) to "any" filter in the filter controls to allow for all connections originating from the LAN. FTP, audio file sharing, and everything else Ive tried seems to work, but AOLIM will not. Im using version 1.2.80.2.

I get to the "validating" step after attempting to sign on and..

When connecting the message I get is:

"A Connect Error Occurred."

Im using an HTTP manual proxy and my browsers work okay. Ive set it up to use the same proxy for all services in the browser, but then Ive messed around with the SOCKS one and tried to make it 5190 but its not really helping things.

Im sure there is a quick and easy solution, which is why Im asking.

    Make sure there is nothing in aim that would let you use proxies. Most programs would let you use http proxy of some kind. If the functionality is there, then you are already set, otherwise read on....

    There is no built in definition for aim on astaro so you will have to create one. Go to definition--> services and click new definition. Name it aim protocol would be tcp/udp source 1:65535 destination 5190. (If you think it uses any other ports besides 5190, you will have to add them here)

    Now go to packet filter -->rules. Click new rule, source LAN (or whatever you call your internal hosts or host), under service select aim from the drop down list and change the action to allow. Click add definition, and once you see it on your firewall make sure to turn it on.

    You should have access to aim now.

    Built in services are just for enabling quick access to the net. You have to create custom services and rules if you want specific services.

    I tried this but still not working.

    I cannot view or edit any properties in the AOLIM to see how its set up. Everything is dimmed. I can click sign-on, but I get "sign in failed".

    Its like everything is dimmed unless perhaps Im signed on?

    I may try to uninstall and reinstall AOLIM.


    Sort of on same topic, when you create an "ANY" rule to somewhere on the web (outbound), does the ANY basically mean "all services in the definitions" rather than "anything and everything no matter what."  

    So ANY is an inclusive list of services set up on Astaro only. If it aint on there, ANY would not allow it?

    welp ended up just uninstalling aolim and downloading trillian. i defaulted to connect through the proxy (maybe it sniffed it from mozilla/msie browser settings?).

    The only filter I have at the moment is internal LAN -- > ANY and it seems to be working fine w/o an added filter. I did add a 5190 service to definitions but removed it b/c the proxy seems to work.

    Should switched to Trillian long ago anyway. My bad.
