Domain name access

I have a number of external databases hosted by multiple vendors and accessible by IP authentication. They have my correct IP but I'm still having problems accessing the databases and they've suggested that I allow certain domain names to have access through our fireall by domain name instead of IP address. Is there a way to do this?

    Hello,

    You will want to create a few definitions: one for the Database Server; one for the Database Service Ports; and one for the Vendor.

    Ensure you have the appropriate service created for accessing the database. For example, to access a FileMaker database, you would need to allow access on port 5003 for both TCP & UDP traffic. So you would want to add a Service Definition:
    Definitions -> Services -> FileMaker, Type-Service, 
    Source/Destination-1:65535 5003.

    Create a Definition for your database server:
    Definitions -> Network
    Select Type as Host and enter the IP address of your Database server.


    Next define the domain name for your Vendor in WebAdmin -> Definitions -> Network. Select either DNS Hostname or DNS Hostname (multiple records), and enter the domain of the Vendor you want to have access. 


    Now you may create a Packet Filter rule allowing access to the database using this newly defined Network Definition:

    Source - (Vendor's Domain); Destination - (Database Server) - Service (FileMaker) - Action (Allow)

    For multiple vendors, just create a definition for each individual vendor as above, then create one Group definition combining all vendors. Use this group for your packet filter. And if your database requires multiple ports you may create each individual Service Definition, then create a Service Group Definition and use the Service Group Definition in your Packet Filter.
