Can someone please tell me if this is correct?

I just switched from SBC to Comcast.  With SBC, all I had is a modem, and my external nic connected to that with a PPOE configuration.  NOW, I have a Comcast router (not just a modem anymore).  The router wont bridge, so I have to let it do its routing thing.  What Ive done is this:

My internet network card ip in astaro is the same, 192.168.0.253
My external card is now changed from ppoe to just a standard NIC, with the IP of 192.168.1.253, gw 192.168.1.254  The Comcast router internal IP I set to 192.168.1.254.

This all seems to work ok, but is it the *right* way to do it?  Is there a better way?

    If you can find docs for the router, you can probably switch it to bridge mode.

    It may not be necessary though, depending on whether you need to NAT any incoming traffic.

    This router doesnt do bridging at all.  Its impossible.

    It sounds like you've got it set up OK (and you say everything seems to work). I've got a Cisco 678 DSL router set up this way and it works fine, there's an extra layer of NAT, but it doesn't hurt anything.

    Except VOIP and IPSEC, and most other P2P communications. :-)

    A better way would be for you to tell the folks at Comcast that you absolutely don't want their router, since you have your own router, and ask them to give you just a basic broadband modem instead. Then you'll be able to run Astaro properly, with its WAN interface on a real IP address.

    Well...this or you just add your astaro-box as a DMZ Box (if your router supports that) to your router, which in turn just forwards the packets to your astaro box.
    If the router can handle the many connections...fine!
    otherwise it wont hurt to reboot the router sometimes. I'd do that with a electric timer...(but that's really like "home improvement" :-D)...my router handles them properly. You won't loose that many connections because astaro remembers them.
