Blocking MSN Messeger

We faced some problems recentrly in our organization with MSN messeger. We tried to block the use of the tool by setting limited protocol permissions on packet filter rules (only HTTP etc.)

However, the MSN automatically connects again through HTTP taking advantage of the ability of the users to connect to the ASL HTTP proxy for web browsing. Is there any way to block MSN messanger for a certain network behind ASL without blocking web access?

    Hi Serafim,

    To disable messenger, you have to change a key on the windows registry with regedit: 

    HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client\PreventAutoRun=1

    Can you identify the IP addresses that the MSN client is connecting to? If so you could block the IP addresses in the packet filters.

    If you are using 5.xxx have you tried the ips chat blocking?

    This is not so practical since it requires per workstation configuration and cannot be applied easily for a group of users of a subnetwork. Is there any other alternative?

    MSN is using several different server IPs. The complete range is not so obvious.

    try using hte ips section to dorp msn chat and msn IM..

    Hello Serafim,
    our students always trying the same with chat p2p etc... 
    only allow using Proxies, no rule to allow http trafic direct from your clients. MSN, ICQ etc. can not work through the proxy. But you will be receive a lot of portscans from your internal network. So exclude your internal network from portscan and you will not receive every minute a mail from your ASL about portscans. 

    This had fit our problems with the damn p2p and chat clients.
