forwarded ports ignored?

Is it me or does forwarding ports do absolutely nothing.
I have long suspected this with bittorrent, and today trying to install and configure Soulseek it became apparent its completely impossible to open a port. I have set up a service named soulseek with the proper port and protocol, nothing. Bittorrent and IRC are the same although they can still function.

It also finally explains why I have never been able to get a ftp server going that wasnt passiv.

I have a internet, dmz, and internal networks but dmz has been disabled for some time.
not sure at all whats going on here, does anyone else have this problem or could shed some light?

    I have port forwarding operating jsut fine with auzureus.  YOu ahve ot use a protocol and port the can be restricted to one port..azureus can do that..ftp can as well with the right ftp server and client.

    Did you also add a packetfilter rule?

    Have you looked at the packetfilter livelog?

    I use eMule and BitTorrent and assure you they work fine, and pass the eMule test web page.

    I set up a service for the one port soulseek uses, and made a packet filter rule to send it to my main comp, which has a staticly given dhcp address.
    i then changed it so source was 1:65535 for ports, no change.
    spent more time messing with it, then got annoyed an uninstalled the program

    i guess tomorrow i will re-install and check packet filter logs.

    i must have some problem somwhere in my overall config. I am planning on reinstalling astaro on another comp to change router comps very soon and need to figure out what this is first...
